Do I know who Cait Black is? Haven't got a clue. But what I do know is that this is one of the prettiest new Indie Pop/Indie Folk versions of "Auld Lang Syne" you're likely to hear this year. Get it through Bandcamp. Too bad it's a mere minute and a half. Amazing what you can do with just a ukulele and a few human voices, isn't it?

1. Sleigh Ride 2. The Christmas Waltz 3. Honky Tonk Christmas 4. Man With The Bag One of the absolute delights of the last several years has been the annual arrival of the latest uke driven home made discs from Ballard C. Boyd. No, I'm not on his list. I wish. Some of the Christmas music obsessed dream of being on Eddie G's list. Me? I wish I was on Ballard C. Boyd's list. Imagine getting this little bundle of holiday sunshine in your mailbox every year. Fortunately for all of us, Ballard's no Grinch. Every year, he uploads his Christmas creations on the web so that everybody can have one. Free! Quite often we get originals, one year we got a wonderful Hanukkah number, and this year we get background singers and kazoos. Head to the web site of the wonderful Ballard C. Boyd where you can not only download "It's Christmas Time Again", but a full SEVEN EPs of Christmas ukulele cheer--dating all the way back to 2005. A former member of the group OK Zombie, Louisville's Nick Peay has been writing and making music for over 15 years. But, having decided to pursue simpler arrangements, Peay only just picked up the ukulele in 2010. “The ukulele is just a happy little instrument,” he says. “You can't help but be happy when you hear it or see someone playing it.” The ukulele has become Nick's primary instrument these days. He's recorded a pair of Uke EP's--"Life & Love & Us" and "Love: A Ukulele Tribute To The Beatles"--both available in his web store ("Life & Love & Us" is also available on Amazon MP3 and iTunes). And now Nick has cut a pair of Christmas songs that you can download free on Bandcamp. "Santa Plays The Ukulele" might be considered the "A" side and is about what you would expect--just good Indie Uke Pop with a bit of an Hawaiian breeze. "Merry Christmas Everyone", on the other hand, demonstrates that Nick Peay has lost none of his Indie Pop/Rock sensibilities since going ukulele solo. I think you'll enjoy them both. Head to Bandcamp and get em now. Won't even need an email addy for these. |
